The trek back to the Soul Society was a silent one, save for the fluttering of the Jigokucho. She’d been lost in her head just wondering exactly what the possibilities were when it came to Katsuo’s death, but she couldn’t pinpoint it, mostly because of the many possibilities that existed. Just a century ago there was the Hell Gate incident and then the Arrancar invasion in both Karakura and Naruki. She’d been a part of the clean-up crew and fortunately did not experience the travesties that followed. Apparently, Urahara’s Shop had been targeted outside of the blood but failed in their endeavors. Thirteenth Division and Eleventh Division had managed to deal with the threats but not without suffering even more casualties of fellow shinigami.

The world of the living has suffered indefinitely, and it seemed as though it was happening again. With their lieutenant dead, Nana was the division’s leading authority and she sighed heavily. Nana didn’t mind doing her duty, but bless the Soul King was it tiring. She’d joined the Thirteenth Division to aid them and sate her human curiosities. Nana had plenty of exploring left to do, but in times like these, her personal goals would have to be set aside for the betterment of the Gotei Thirteen.

"I’ll have to send a messenger to Tenth Division while I’m at it."

The door back to the Soul Society was blindingly bright as she stepped back through the Fifth Division Senkaimon. If she were simply returning home, she would’ve gone through her own division’s gate, but since she had business to do in Central anyway, this was the easier and quicker route.

The games were still lively just as she had left, and later on, she would have to check on her bets. Nana pulled out her Denreishiki, contacting the communication unit to confirm the messenger, and thankfully, the gatekeepers of the First Division would be expecting her. Other than when she’d been a student in the Academy and then an Academy instructor, Nana’s time spent in Central was spare. She never liked it only due to the number of policies indited, especially with the rampant Scorpion lurking around every corner. How she and Captain-Commander had ended up married and with a child was something Nana had always wondered. Yet, the two shinigami were still work-horses, so it was as if nothing was changed; such was the life of the undying soldier.

When she’d finally reached the Southern Gate, Nana was met with two guards who asked for identification and her reasoning for being here. Pulling up her sleeve, Nana revealed the Thirteenth Division emblem and confirmed her meeting with the Head Lieutenant. Even with the evidence to prove of her position and additional confirmation, they were reluctant but eventually complied. One had chosen to stay and guard the southern barrack gate alone and while the other escorted her to the lieutenant’s meeting room. Glancing around, Nana could only ponder the amount of skill each of these Shinigami possessed in order to have been recruited into the prestigious First Division.

“Here. Head Lieutenant Kasumi will be alerted of your presence and join you shortly.”

The guard spoke in a gruff tone and opened the door into the lieutenant’s hall where she was met with a large wooden table in the center of the room. Thirteen chairs, each with the respective division colors plastered in the back of the chairs to cater to each of the divisions’ lieutenants. Nana’s nimble and thin digits rested against the arm of the Thirteenth’s chair and lowered her gaze. Today was filled with brutality outside of the games it seemed. She wasn’t sure how she felt about Katsuo’s death. On one hand, he was a shinigami, and death was always at our doors; however, he was her superior, and while not having been under his authority for too long, she knew that he was a strong empathizer for justice, even if it went against the grain, and that was something admirable she found about him. Perhaps she is more disappointed that she was unable to bring him, or their fellow shinigami home.

Didn’t her lieutenant have a brother? Nana recalls the familial name of the Oda Clan and imagines the Fifth Division’s Captain Oda learning of Katsuo’s death… Ah, that was right. Her lieutenant had been stripped of the clan name and became ostracized for his actions in hiding Lady Oki and her child. Would he be sad? They had history, even if he’d be the one to remove his brother for his mistakes. With her hands at her sides, Nana turned her eyes away from the cold seat and held this faraway look in her eyes. Even if no one mourned him, the least that she could’ve done would be to find out what exactly happened to him. After informing the head lieutenant, she’d have to find Lieutenant Hyouzoku as soon as possible.

While the Kenpachi games was captivating the attention and focus of Rukon citizens and shinigami alike, Fuyuko was in the Captain Commander's office attending to some work, holding the fort for the Commander. As she was immersed in work she silently kept track of the games. While listening to Captain Mukuro’s bracket and match she would be lying if she said she didn't feel a bit nervous for him, or uncertain on what exactly the outcome would and could be. During her day the raven haired Lieutenant was informed by one of her subordinates that someone from the Thirteen Division had requested a meeting with her regarding the human world in karakura. The nature of the correspondence made the situation seem rather dire. The Gotei 13 was a military institution, one of order and stability, there was a chain of command to be followed. If that chain was now being broken it meant that there was an issue, for why else would a member of the thirteen urgently seek to deliver intel regarding their jurisdiction to her and not to their actual designated Lieutenant, Katsuo. Fuyuko’s curiosity was admittedly sparked, and if nothing else, if the matter turned out to be not urgent at all, this shinigami would pay the appropriate price for not only breaking the chain of command, but wasting her time as well.

Fuyuko had not gone out immediately, some time had passed while she was completing the task before her before she had finally left the office. While mentally preparing for the meeting she walked down the hallway to go make her rounds through their division grounds. The Kenpachi games seemed to have everyone on the edge of their seats, some studying the moves and techniques of the combatants while others were desperately checking their respective bets. As she strolled through the halls she detected a foreign reiatsu entering from the southern gate. Having familiarized herself with the reiatsu of those belonging to her division as well as the other Lieutenants and Captains, Fuyuko figured it was more than likely the individual from squad thirteen. when she turned around the corner heading to the lieutenants meeting hall she got stopped by a division member. He bowed his head respectfully as he spoke.

”Head lieutenant Kasumi! The person who requested for you is here. ”

”Very well you are dismissed.”

Nodding her head towards the male she walked towards the hall. A guard stands at the entrance of the hall reserved for the Vice Captains, noting the approach of Head Lieutenant Kasumi he bows and opens the door, granting her entrance. A loud booming voice announces Fuyuko’s arrival, if the opening of the door had not drawn her guest’s attention, she was now certainly more than aware that she was there. The raven haired woman took her seat at the round table, her eyes finally locking onto the other female in the room, the one who had requested her presence, urgently.

”It's not every day you see a member of the Thirteenth Division requesting…no, insisting on a meeting with the head lieutenant. Well then-”

She crosses her legs under the table while folding her hands over one another on top of it. Her attention was focused on the woman before her, eyes perked up for whatever bit of important or seemingly important news this person had to offer. She prayed it was as urgent as she made it seem, otherwise….

”-state your business with me.”

Through sheer dumb luck the drunken swordsman manages to avoid the Cero that was fired at him all because he decided to pass out for a nap. It isn’t long before the destructive blast makes contact with a distant crystal and explodes on impact, this one being much more violent than the Kido that was fired earlier in the match. The beast stands idle admiring the blast just before the whispers of Suiyo glide along the air into his ear. He does not move, just as he did after firing the blast, perhaps he wasn’t admiring the blast at all but instead chose to stare off into nothingness. This choice not to move proves fatal as flashes of light render the top of his head severed, these flashes of lights undoubtedly are cuts from the Sword Saint with a final one arcing away from his back. Diced to pieces in a blink of an eye, in a flash of light he crumbles to the ground… If only it were that simple. Golden mist begins to trace itself along Suiyo’s right side, moving towards his left, well both Suiyo’s in this case.

The Vasto Begins to Move

step…

The sound of a foot touching the ground resonates in the white haired man’s left ear.

step…

The opposite foot touches the ground continuing the stride of the monster that is regenerating one of its left arms. It looks at itself in the reflection of the golden blade, it had been so long since it last saw its true form it had almost forgotten what it looked like. It is unharmed, not even touched by the edge of the drunkard's blade, then what was it that he cut? He had diced up a left arm that was discarded by the beast in order to make use of the Hohō Technique Utsusemi. With no Haori to use or even a Shihakusho top it had to make due with one of its arms, an easy trade off as it can easily be grown back. When was this technique used? Surely Suiyo gave the monster no time to react from the time he spoke to it to the time he cut it. The beast made its move shortly after firing the Cero, the shifting of its foot was the moment it used Shunpo to vanish from its location, leaving behind a speedclone to take whatever damage was coming to it, well leaving behind a left arm to do so.

The monster walks on, unbothered by Suiyo’s presence and is more caught up in looking at itself. Clearly this beast is more vain than the Shinigami it inhabits, turning its head to look at itself at different angles all while fully enveloped by the golden mist. It wraps itself around him, weaving between the many limbs, the many fingers, it is inhaled and exhaled. It is as much a part of its form as its very skin. It eventually comes to a stop, still gazing at itself in the blade's reflection, however, is this really the beast standing here or is another trick of speed being played here?

Everyone is Acting Out!

In the Rukongai the Oda watch in silence, well all of them save for one girl protesting and demanding answers as to why she can no longer watch her fathers match. Restrained by Kido and moved to the far end of the hall all she can do is waste her breath, whining and complaining will get her nowhere, but she doesn’t know this. Having spent a large part of her life being raised outside of the Oda Manor she has grown into being quite the brat, spoiled and temperamental. The deafening silence from the other members of her family do not help her growing anxiety and anger as she fights and struggles to free herself from the Kido she is bound it, which is Bakudō #63. Sajō Sabaku, a spell that binds its targets with very thick rope, physical strength alone is not enough to break free from its binds.

Elsewhere in the Rukongai the citizens are unsure what to make of Captain Mukuro’s sudden abandonment of the fight. They speculate that this must be a ploy of his, something to take the other two off guard and land a killing blow on both simultaneously while their guards are down. Simple, one track minded thinking from the audience, the majority of which have never held a blade before. The actions of Kyomu can hold many meanings, there can be many layers to the simple action of just walking away from a fight, only the two currently locked in combat can grasp onto these meanings and layers and understand them and more than that anticipate them. Needless to say the citizens of the Rukongai are entertained and troubled by the fact a Captain has such a power at his disposal, and the only thing separating him and the citizens is a wall he can easily cross at any time.

”Those damn Oda, why did Shobatsu let them back into the Seireitei? If it's not them killing and maiming good soldiers it's something like this!”

A lesser noble raises his voice, feeling bold enough to speak up seeing as there are many Shinigami around to run security at this event and to the best of his knowledge there are no other Oda in the crowd.

”As fun as this fight looks, we need to round up the Oda and lock them up this time! You see what happens when they are left free to do as they please!?”

A moment of bravery turns into a sudden political statement, one that not everyone is on board with. The gates of the Oda Manor stay shut to all except for particular visitors, this is the norm, but if these nobles showed up at their doorstep with the intent to arrest them, these very same doors would be wide open. It would be like charging head first into a dark cave knowing there are a pack of wolves waiting inside to maul you. Seeing the reception to his idea the noble quiets down and puts his eyes back on the giant screen broadcasting one of three fights taking place for the Kenpachi Games.

Back at the Oda Manor, the temperature in the hall slowly began to climb, enough for everyone to look away from the Muken fight to discover the source. The source for the temperature increase was coming from Tenzen’s daughter, who was mumbling something to herself as she continued her efforts to free herself. What she was mumbling was a lesson taught to her by her father on how to let out only a bit of Reiatsu instead of letting all of it flood out. Sadly the amount she was producing wasn’t enough to help undo the Kido. Frustrated, she finally gives in and lays on her side, the temperature in the hall returning to normal. Although brief this was enough to unglue everyone from the screen, things are far from over in the Muken and with them turning away as they did they could have potentially missed the end of the fight.

Nana turns her head towards the door as it opens and the Head Lieutenant reveals herself, though it isn't as if the guard's announcement hadn't alerted the shinigami of her superior's incoming presence. When their eyes meet, Nana simply lowers her head and gives a bow to Fuyuko and stays that way up until she manages to take her seat. The fifth seat follows the Head Lieutenant's pathing as she sits in her allotted space and crosses her legs, eyes filled with curiosity as to what importance this seated shinigami had for her to break the chain of command. A stickler for the rules herself, Nana was more than comfortable with breaking them for an instance like this.

”It's not every day you see a member of the Thirteenth Division requesting…no, insisting on a meeting with the head lieutenant. Well then, state your business with me.”

She stands upright, her face stern and expression completely serious as she utters these next words.

"Lieutenant Katsuo Toshiyuki is dead, as are several other members in the Thirteenth Division."

Nana holds out her phone toward Fuyuko. On-screen it has the recorded departure of the lieutenant and his team as well as the time in which his vitals had disappeared, along with his party save for Saiko Junsui. There were also the recorded pings of the influx of Hollows all over Karakura Town, and the number of them was so disgustingly potent that Nana was more than relieved that a Menos Grande hadn't joined their raid.

"When his and his party's vitals disappeared from our monitors, I was alerted to immediately investigate the scene to see the damage. A secondary unit followed me but was sent to deal with the other affected areas and go in pursuit of a member that was scene leaving Naruki City for reasons unknown."

The grip she had on her device tightened, but only for a moment, out of frustration.

"We cleared out Karakura with a primary and secondary sweep to make sure that Hollows were completely cleansed. As we speak we still have no spikes during this point in time. The coordinates listed were Lieutenant Toshiyuki's last known position, but when I got there, there was nothing but Hollows that flooded the area, to be completely honest, it was perhaps the most potent in all of Karakura. I was unable to find any sign of bodies, or any form of their reiryoku in the chance there were survivors, but there was... nothing."

Nana swipes her finger against the screen to the right and shows a picture of Saiko Junsui.

"I'm sure you remember seeing her before, Head Lieutenant, as she was supposedly involved in the Oki case two weeks ago. Our Lieutenant didn't say anything about it, but we had our guesses. Regardless, this girl is the one who was caught leaving out of Naruki City, which is the Tenth Division's jurisdiction. I'd like to apologize for our incompetence as the acting authority of my division; this is her second transgression, and I'm not sure that keeping her in Thirteenth will help us when we're trying to build back our prestige."

A soft sigh escapes before she continues.

"She is currently under interrogation but according to our reports, she's choosing not to say anything which brings me to my next point or request rather. I don't think that she would disregard her duties like she did and go out of our jurisdiction without reason, especially while working under the Lieutenant's order."

Nana brushes her hair back behind her ear and looks to the Head Lieutenant, watching for any form of emotion to show on her porcelain face while she explained everything. She even places her Denreishiki directly before the Head Lieutenant if holding it in front of her was not enough.

"I don't think that my lieutenant died by a regular Hollow attack. Even with as many as there were, I'm sure that he and his party could have done some damage, and if they weren't able to, they would've called for back-up, but no call or message came for it. The World of the Living has had the Gates of Hell and entities come from Hell on their grounds, not to mention the blood of the Soul King. Something else had to have been powerful enough to wipe out a lieutenant and his squad before they could call for help and leave no evidence behind."

A solemn look appears on Nana's face because she is as in the dark as the person she is telling this to. She could only take a shot in the dark from here.

"As a former member of the Tenth Division, you know of Lieutenant Hyouzoku more than I do, but I'd like to conduct an investigation with your permission. The Thirteenth Division is well aware of the jurisdiction borders, even Saiko would not be able to enter or leave Naruki City without resistance from Tenth Division. I'm not sure of Lieutenant Hyouzoku's current disposition, but it'd make sense for there to be a report on their end as well. Perhaps I could get into contact with him? Would you happen to have his information so I can add it to my Denreishiki?"

The youthful Shinigami trailed a thought for a moment as he waited for the First Division member to make her response. Whether she did or didn't honestly would have gone in one ear and out the other in this moment as a thought came to his head in that exact moment. There was something he needed to attend to with a bit of haste. It was nothing in line with his job but something more on his personal side that could potentially pose an issue none the less. His disconnected expression sparked back to life as he looked to the woman before him with an apologetic visage.

"My apologies! I have to be off for something! It'd be reeeeeaaaaallly bad if I don't get to it right away."

Asahi gave a nervous chuckle as unfortunate possibilities crossed his mind. He gave a barrage of quick bows before starting to run off in the direction of his division's barracks.

"I'm sure you need to get back to Oki-sama anyway! You are welcome to send any requests to me electronically! Bye bye!~"

And off he went. Out of sight with that conclusion. He had honestly been on his way to deal with that which brought him concern but completely got side tracked by his closing tasks, his introduction to Honoka Oki, and this last exchange. His sprinting soon lead into a flurry of flash steps, trying to break as much distance as possible. Quickly. Quickly. Quickly. A brief lapse in his attention that had to be corrected.
