Step
Leaving the Captains to their final task, their final test, the Captain Commander takes his first step outside of the Great Hall. His movement is slow, patient. Though his hulking frame stands straight, his pace befits his old age, and he moves with a grace both proud and ancient. Usually such a stride is accompanied by the tapping of his Zanpakuto turned walking cane, and the absence of such is something that those of the First Division would immediately find off putting. An ignorant foe, looking upon the man, might think him nothing but a harmless senior on a leisurely stroll. Still, there isn’t a soul alive within the Soul Society that didn’t know of the power of Shobatsu Murasaki. This of course makes moments such as these, where the Commander choses to act his age, even more unsettling in their deception.
Step
As he descends the stairs he passes by without so much as a glance to the kneeling Akarui. Knowing her place, she chose not to question the Commander’s early departure from the meeting. After all, he had a reason for everything that he did, even something so trivial as leaving early was likely one step of many on the path towards a balanced future. The Commander has no orders for her, knowing well that she would already task it upon herself to identify anything out of place with the Captains, such as if they are marked with an injury or not. She knows her duty is not yet complete, not until every one of the Captain’s steps foot outside of those massive doors. Anything else from her superior would simply be a distraction. Yet despite this, a distraction is exactly what manifests before her, causing her to come to arms, addressing a new intruder.
“Kiyoshi—”
Step
“Captain-Commander Shobatsu Murasaki.”
The Commander stops at the sound of a familiar voice, that of the Third seat of Sixth Division, Shusuke Kiyoshi. It appears that another piece has fallen into place before him. The moment Shusuke speaks, the Commander’s descend comes to a halt. He stands just one step before Shusuke, the Third Seat only coming up to the Commander’s chest. Shobatsu does not speak, nor acknowledge the man’s arrival any more than he already has. Instead, he permits the Shinigami to continue his report.
“I, Shusuke Kiyoshi of Division Six will be the one to escort you to the Central Forty-Six grounds as commissioned by the Central Forty-Six themselves. As you are aware, you need to stand before them to answer for any crimes committed against the Seireitei. I ask that you walk exactly two and a half meters directly in front of me at all times and maintain that distance throughout the duration of the escort. You will refrain from any form of violence, and maintain a level of speed in which will get us both there in approximately twenty or less minutes. If you do not have any questions at this time, then we should get moving.”
The First Division Barracks are silent and still, not even a bird dare caw, nor a breeze dare flow, until the Commander responds. He raises his right hand to the air, gesturing for Akarui to let this transgression pass. Without word, it lowers back down to his side, as the Commander stares on above the head of the Kiyoshi. Time seems to come to a halt in this single moment, the air turning palpable with tension. The Third Seat had only done his duty, and to the letter, and yet there was a sense that his very life hangs in the balance for doing so. The only relief to this suspense, would be the Commander’s response, and yet in this eternal second, there is only silence. Until..
"I'll be accompanying you on this trip."
Lieutenant Oki arrives to sever the tension with the sharpness of her smile. Though her face is friendly, her presence makes it clear that she is not asking permission, but commanding it be so. Though the orders from the Central Forty Six did not elaborate on whether Shusuke may escort a guest as well, there was absolutely no chance of the man directly disobeying the Head Lieutenant. After all, she is second only to the Commander himself. Any hesitation or doubt that dwells within the Kiyoshi is further put to rest, as the Commander finally responds. The final piece laying itself before him, he can now….
“Proceed.”
The Commander gives his order, not bothering to look at either Shusuke or Honoka, he continues his glazed purple stare straight ahead, looking towards only the future. It would seem the Third Seat had done his job well, as his life had been spared. Still, the thought would undoubtedly linger that if he had approached this any other way that would likely not be the case.
Step
Having now reached the base of the stairs, the Commander walks on towards the Central Forty Six Headquarters. He does not bother to wait for Shusuke’s lead, but instead leaves it to the man to keep his own pace, to keep his own distance, as laid out by his own orders. It is unnecessary to measure the Commander’s distance or pace. He moves exactly as he should. The Central Forty Six building is but a relatively short distance to the Captain’s Hall, able to be seen from their location. There would not be much time for pleasantries on this stroll, and the Head Lieutenant has made it clear that she needs some of her superior’s precious time. Benevolently, he gives it to her.
“Report.”
His thunderous voice, even at a hushed tone, reverberates to the bone. Though the Head Lieutenant concealed herself well, being so artfully versed in etiquette, she still could not hide her uncertainty before the all knowing Murasaki. She had been within the man’s company more than any soul in existence, and so knew well that there was no fooling him. Even if the Commander didn’t show it, he is more than privy to the unease that consumes her heart in this moment. By giving her his orders, he allowed her to speak freely of First Division matters before the outsider from Sixth. With a trial lingering, there is only one thing that the Central Forty Six could want of Shobatsu Murasaki, and the fact they waited this long means that they might be able to get it. This moment might well be the final chance for her to say any last words. If she had learned anything from her time as his Lieutenant, it would be not to waste them.
